Three Inch Mounting And Gun
Twin 3-inch mounting and single 3-inch gun located on the parade ground next to the Water Gate, Tilbury Fort, Essex.
From the information sheet:
"The mounting was brough back from the German ranges at PeeneMunde after the Second World War while a single 3-inch barrel was added at the Shoeburyness ranges in Essex. The hybrid was used to test ammunition for a new design of automatic, remotely controlled naval gun turret armed with twin 3-inch guns. These were water cooled to allow a very high rate of fire of about 90 rounds per barrel per minute against the jet aircraft coming into service in the early 1950s. However complications with the design meant that the turrets only saw service with the Royal Canadian Navy and by the late 1950s were being superseded by guided missiles."
Dates
Mounting: around 1941.
Mark VI Gun: around 1950.
