The Aristonothos Krater

A large Roman vessel for mixing wine.

"It was commissioned for his banquets by some aristocrat of Caere (present-day Cerveteri) from a potter who had emigrated from Greece to rich Etruria, where he made this masterpiece and signed it Aristonothos epoiesen (Aristonothos made this). On one side it depicts the blinding of the Cyclops Polyphemus by Odeysseus. On the other is a sea battle between a warship and a merchant vessel. This scene most likely recalls armed conflicts between Greeks and Etruscans."

Located in the Capitoline Museums, Rome.

Date: second quarter of 7th Century BC.
