Ice House Knole

Brick structure standing to the west of the main house within Knole Park. It consists of a dome over an ice chamber which was accessed via a vaulted passage to the north-east. The purpose of the structure was to store ice which could be used in the preparation and storage of foodstuffs. Circumstantial evidence indicates the presence of an icehouse at Knole during the period 1677-1706, but the earliest known archival reference to such a structure is from 1720. Mid-18th century accounts refer to the maintenance and restocking of the ice house. The icehouse continued in use until the mid-1930s and the vaulted entrance passage was probably backfilled in the mid-20th century.
