Chalk Barge Bed Rotherhithe

The remains of a chalk barge bed on the Thames foreshore, below 'Charles Hay & Son' Rotherhithe, London.

Date: 18th Century.

Chalk beds were used as soft material for ships/boats to lay on when docked at low tide. The chalk stops the underside of the boat from being damaged by the foreshore. This one lies under a later layer of hard material which is being eroded to reveal the chalk beneath. Amongst the chalk and nearby are large quantities of discarded ship nails and other metal work.
